Made up of three of St. Louis' finest acoustic musicians. The Gateway Ramblers are one of St. Louis' Premier Acoustic/Bluegrass Trios
The trio includes:
* Troy Brenningmeyer on dobro, lap steel, weissenborn & harmony vocals
* Will Miskall on vocals, standup bass & electric bass
* Ben Smith on vocals & acoustic guitar
The out of the ordinary instrumentation, ultra-tight 3-Part Vocal Harmonies, and an eclectic set list are all part of what gives them their unique, signature sound. Their set list is made up of a wide variety of Acoustic & Bluegrass music and covers such artists as The Seldom Scene, Hot Rize, Jerry Douglas, Hank Williams, Andy Hall, Rob Ickes, Bob Wills, & Miles Davis and more! As well as popular acoustic bluegrass covers, they are constantly building up a collection of captivating original compositions as well.
Troy Brenningmeyer, originally from Anna, IL, is the founding member of "The Gateway Ramblers". Although he started out on guitar, even graduating with a degree in Jazz Guitar Performance, his main focus for the last several years has been the Dobro. Greatly influenced by such players as Jerry Douglas, Rob Ickes, Andy Hall, Randy Korhs, and more, Troy brings all of his influences together plus his jazz, blues, and rock guitar background to create a sound that is uniquely his own. While comfortable performing on stage, he is equally comfortable as an instructor of the instrument, creating one of the most popular Dobro Instructional Websites in the world, www.LessonsWithTroy.com.
Ben Smith (Guitar/Vocals)
Ben Smith brings a wide range of musical interests and a keen ear to The Gateway Ramblers. As a guitarist, he’s constantly seeking new possibilities for chords, rhythm, and drive, and his voice—which draws as much from country as from bluegrass—is equally at home in lead and harmony roles.
Born in Roanoke, Virginia and having grown up in Tupelo, Mississippi, Ben moved to St. Louis in 2006. Since then, he’s performed as a vocalist, guitarist, fiddler, and mandolinist with such local and regional acts as The Bug Tussel Bluegrass Band, The Wayward Mountaineers, Prairie Soul, Ryan Spearman, Casey Reeves, and Rich Simmons. The musical highlight of his life so far has been learning firsthand from several of his fiddle heroes, including Mark O’Connor, Aubrey Haynie, and Andy Leftwich, at O’Connor’s Fiddle Camp in 2009.
Will Miskall (Bass/Vocals)
Originally from St. Louis, MO, Will is a veteran to the St. Louis bluegrass scene. Playing in various St. Louis bluegrass groups, such as The Local Gents, The Foggy Memory Boys, and The Grits, to name a few. Will is a very gifted musician as well as a powerful singer. In addition to laying down rock solid bass grooves, Will's high lonesome tenor vocals make him an integral part of the sound of The Gateway Ramblers.
